Words by District Magazine:

“He’s running through a little nightmarish zoetrope.”

‘It’s Too Cold For Jokes’ is the second release from Dublin artist This Fresh Hell. The track follows on from the “Bosch-esque club tune” ‘Intact‘ which the musician, composer and producer shared in December.

While the moniker This Fresh Hell is driven by Des Garvey, he collaborates with a number of different artists when creating music and performing live. On ‘Intact’, vocalist Niamh McGoldrick and saxophonist Sean Furey lent their talents to the track. This time around vocalist Sam Burton co-wrote and sang on ‘It’s Too Cold For Jokes’.

“The song was co-written and recorded with Sam Burton (vocalist) over two or three sessions in our place (Ailfionn Recording Studio). The narrative sways between a couple of tropes, the speaker erratically moves from thoughts of a grim future, to a roman bath, to sideways glances between jealous parents. He’s running through a little nightmarish zoetrope. Am I selling this yet?”

The tender imagery, shot by cinematographer Eoin Mulligan, ebbs and flows with Burton’s vocal talent. According to This Fresh Hell the visuals show the dichotomy between stillness and discomfort.

“The idea of the video was to show the two subjects becoming more and more contorted, while also sharing moments of peace and complete comfort with one another, to counteract how frenetic the narrator’s thought-process is. Showing the parallels between both subjects was an important part of the choreography for the same reason. A shot of suspended dust that was achieved accidentally at the tail end of the shoot ended up becoming a main motif that we were really pleased with, it worked perfectly as a pensive little moment of reflection.”

The track is from an extended project that’s set to be released this year. We’re excited to share it with you for the first time below.
